An Garda Síochána is the national police service of Ireland, responsible for upholding the law and protecting the people. Its members are held to the higher standard of conduct established in Article 89. An Garda Síochána shall be unarmed in routine policing, consistent with the long-standing Irish tradition of policing by consent, except for specialist units whose use of arms is subject to strict oversight and accountability.
